Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of high-protein fluid just beneath the skin. This swelling generally occurs in the arms or legs, but it also may affect other parts of the body including the trunk, breast, genitals, head and neck. Lymphedema usually develops when lymph vessels are damaged or lymph nodes are removed, but can also be present when lymphatic vessels are missing or impaired due to a trauma, cancer treatment, infection, malignant tumor, or other swelling related disorders such as chronic venous insufficiency.
Treatment of lymphedema should be performed ONLY by a specialist that is certified in lymphedema treatment. The gold standard of treatment is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), for which our lymphatic therapist holds a certification. CDT consists of the four following components:
